How do I connect a smartphone to a BMW X5 using Bluetooth?

I recently bought my wife a new BMW X5 after losing a bet. Earlier this year I told her “mark my words—everyone will be clamoring to get into the metaverse by Labor Day”, to which she replied “I bet you a new BMW X5 that you’re wrong”. So, her new X5 is in the driveway, and now I need to figure out how it works. How do I connect a smartphone to a BMW X5 using Bluetooth?

Connecting a
BMW X5
to your smartphone via Bluetooth is easy, as you just need to pair it with your X5’s iDrive 7 system.
Getting your wife’s phone paired with her new Bimmer is simple (far more simple than predicting VR’s future), so here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on her smartphone
  • On your X5’s iDrive 7’s infotainment screen, press COM, then press Mobile Devices, and then New Device
  • The iDrive system should be discoverable on her smartphone
  • On your wife’s smartphone, tap BMW from the Bluetooth menu—the phone and the X5’s iDrive system will start pairing, with a message on screen confirming this
  • Confirm the PIN on her smartphone and on the iDrive screen match, and press YES
With that, your wife’s smartphone will be paired with her X5 via Bluetooth. Enjoy the ride (as a passenger).
