A car key that doesn’t work is certainly annoying. While you may have to replace the key fob in some cases, chances are the key fob battery for your
Toyota Prius
is dead.
Fortunately, installing one is easy. Follow these steps to change the car key battery on a Toyota Prius:
  • Push in the tab on the bottom of the key fob to release the key.
  • Pull the physical key out. Use the key to pry apart the key fob housing.
  • On one side of the housing, you should see a battery. Use your fingernail or a pen tip to pop out the battery.
  • Replace the old battery with a CR2032 battery. These cost about $2 at a local hardware store or pharmacy.
  • Snap the fob back together. Test the key to ensure that it works.
If this doesn’t fix the issue, you probably need a new key fob. A replacement key fob costs between $200 and $450 depending on your model year and type of key fob.
