When buying a new car, most dealerships will require that you show
proof of insurance
before you can take your new car home. But obtaining that insurance isn’t all that difficult.
To get
insurance when buying a new car
, you will need the vehicle identification number or VIN. The dealership can provide this. Then, confirm if any specific type of coverage the vehicle needs. Most lenders require that financed vehicles carry comprehensive and collision coverage, otherwise known as full coverage.
Once you have the VIN and an idea of the coverage you need, start shopping around for insurance. You can collect quotes from several insurance companies or use
Jerry
. Jerry is a licensed broker and can gather quotes for your new car from up to 50 of the top insurance providers.
If you find a quote that fits your budget and matches your coverage needs, you can purchase it. Once purchased, your new insurance company will send you your ID cards and any additional proof the dealership may need.
