Cost
Dairyland advertises that they offer motorcycle insurance for as low as $6 per month, for a liability-only policy.
However, it’s more likely that you’ll pay somewhere in the range of $15 to $50 per month, especially if you opt-in to one or more of Dairyland’s custom coverages (more on this next).
Your premium rate also depends on your likelihood of filing an insurance claim and how much it would cost to repair/replace your motorcycle. As a result, insurance providers will consider your age, riding experience, motorcycle model, and accident history when calculating your official quote.
Coverage options
All states (except Florida) require you to carry a minimum amount of motorcycle insurance to operate your bike on public roads. Make sure to confirm the necessary coverage limits with your local DMV, but the most common minimum motorcycle insurance policy is a 25/50/20 plan—here’s what that entails:
$50,000 of bodily injury per accident
However, a liability-only policy only makes you street legal. If you want to actually provide protection for your motorcycle, you’ll want to consider customizing your policy with some (or all) of Dairyland’s custom coverage options:
| | |
---|
Bodily injury liability coverage & property damage liability coverage | When you're at fault in an accident, these coverages will pay for the medical and property expenses incurred by the victims. | Required by law in all states except Florida. Check with your DMV for coverage limits. |
| Reimburses you for repairs to your motorcycle that stem from a collision with another motorcycle, vehicle, or stationary object. | Optional, but recommended if you want to protect your sweet two-wheeled ride! |
| Reimburses you for repairs that stem from a damage-causing event that is out of your control, like vandalism, hitting an animal, or severe weather. | Optional, but recommended if you want to protect your bike from all of life’s surprises—especially if you live in an area that has high crime rates or is susceptible to inclement weather. |
| Ensures your motorcycle will be repaired with genuine original manufacturer replacement parts. | Optional, but recommended if you don’t want your mechanic using cheap aftermarket parts. |
| Supplements your health insurance to pay for medical expenses resulting from an accident for you and your passengers. It can also provide non-medical assistance, like lost wages while you’re recovering. | Optional, but recommended—especially if you don’t have health insurance. |
Optional/special equipment | Protects the difference between the custom equipment’s value and the standard equipment it replaces. | Optional, but recommended if your motorcycle is highly customized. |
| Provides medical coverage for your guest passengers. | Optional, but recommended if you frequently have ride-along guests. |
| Provides reimbursed access to a rental while your motorcycle is at the mechanic after a claimable accident. | Optional, and probably not necessary if you have something else to drive while your bike is being brought back to life. |
| If your bike is three years old or newer and is a total loss after an accident, this coverage pays for a new bike—including your optional equipment. | Optional, but recommended if you have an expensive bike with a high depreciation rate. |
| Offers 24/7 emergency roadside labor and towing services. | Optional, but recommended if you're not very mechanically savvy. |
| Provides you with additional insurance coverage if the at-fault driver doesn’t have the state-required liability insurance. | Required in some states but typically optional. If you choose to opt out, you’ll be trusting your fellow riders/drivers to follow liability insurance laws. |

The cheapest motorcycle insurance companies
While it’s unlikely you’ll actually be quoted at the $6/month premium that Dairyland advertises, their coverage plans are still some of the most affordable on the market. Progressive
and Geico
are really the only two insurance companies that give them a run for their money (pun intended). However, there’s also good value in purchasing an insurance policy directly from Harley-Davidson if that’s the brand of bike you ride. And Markel Insurance should also be on your radar if you own a high-value motorcycle.
