How do driving lessons work?

I have my first driving lesson next week and I’m not sure what to expect. How do driving lessons usually work? Will I just have to get into the car and start driving?

You’ve got the right idea, but it won’t be as sudden as that! Most driving instructors will structure their lessons so that you work up to roadway driving. In your first lesson, you’ll probably learn stuff like:
  • How to prepare your car for driving by
    adjusting your mirrors
    and your seat.
  • How to use the various controls in your car.
  • How to move off from your parking spot.
You’ll typically start by driving in a small, enclosed area, like a parking lot, but you’ll usually graduate to driving on a street within a lesson or two. Try not to be too nervous about this part! Your instructor will have their own set of pedals on the passenger side, so they can help you if something unexpected happens.
When you learn how to drive, it’s also important to learn about your insurance options. The
