How can you get reckless driving off your record in Virginia?
I was charged with reckless driving about two weeks ago when I was racing on the streets of Richmond. I know I was wrong, but it’s the only ticket I’ve ever received. Since I have a good record otherwise, I thought I might be able to get the charge removed—how can I get rid of reckless driving on my record in Virginia?

In Virginia, you have a limited right to get reckless driving removed from your record, but it’s certainly not easy. The only way to remove reckless driving is by having it expunged through a long legal process. To start, you have to have one of these three things happen to you:
- You have to be acquitted of the charge. If you’re convicted, reckless driving stays on your record for 11 years.
- You need to have pleaded no contest, which means you never admitted guilt or innocence.
- The prosecutor failed to bring actual charges against you within the allotted time frame.
If you fall under one of these categories, you’ll need to hire a lawyer with the hope that you can have the charge expunged. Nothing’s guaranteed, but as long as you keep your driving record clean following the charge, your chances go up exponentially.
