How can I tell if my car needs an oil change?
How do you know if your car needs an oil change? My car has been having some problems lately. Full transparency—I haven't gotten an oil change in quite a while. So I'm thinking that might be the issue.

“There are a few telltale signs that a car needs an oil change. These include:
- Engine noise
- Excessive exhaust
- Shaking
- Falling or low oil
- Mileage
- Abnormal oil texture
- Check engine light
Engine noise: Your oil should be lubricating your engine, so if you’re hearing a lot of engine noise, it may be your oil level. Low oil will often cause a knocking sound in your car. Or if your engine makes a ticking sound when you start your car, that could be an indicator of low oil, too.
Lots of exhaust: If you’re seeing more exhaust than usual—especially if your car is newer—you might need an oil change. Lots of exhaust is sometimes a sign that your engine oil is old and needs to be replaced, although it can be indicative of other issues, as well. Regardless, it’s a good idea to get your car checked out in this instance.
Shaking: If your car shakes while it idles, you might need an oil change. This is because your car’s engine will create more friction without enough oil.
Falling or low oil: You can top off your oil level between oil changes, but pay attention to how often you do so. Continuing to drive a car with low oil can damage your engine. If it seems like your oil level is decreasing very quickly or if it’s falling below the minimum, take your car in as soon as possible, as it may indicate deeper problems.
Increased mileage: If you’ve been driving your car long distances (say, you went on a road trip), you’ll probably have to change your oil sooner than you normally would.
Change in oil texture: As you drive your car, your oil will pick up pieces of grime from your engine. If your oil looks gritty, you may be due for a change.
Check engine light: A
