How can I start a Honda Civic with the key?
I drive a Honda Civic EX-L with a keyless ignition system you push to start. I knew the battery in my key fob was dying, so I ordered a few replacements online. Unfortunately, they haven’t been delivered yet, and my fob is entirely dead. Is there a way to start my Honda Civic with the actual key?

Honda Civic EX-L
.To start a Honda Civic with the key:
- Remove the physical key stored in the fob
- Use the key to unlock your door
- Hold the dead fob right next to the start button or use it to push the start button
Note that you don’t need the physical key to start the car—just to unlock and lock the vehicle.
While a bit inconvenient, hopefully, this method can hold you over until the replacement batteries arrive. Should you discover the battery wasn’t the issue and the fob is broken, expect to pay $130 to $390 for a replacement. Ouch!
