How can I learn to drive my car fast?
I’m 24 and I’ve never driven by myself. I just got my license and a used car, and I’d like to take a road trip in a few months. But I still don’t feel comfortable driving. What’s the best way for me to learn how to drive my car as fast as possible?

While there’s no shortcut for learning how to drive, you can work hard to quickly gain experience behind the wheel. Like any other skill, driving is learned through hard work and practice—not by taking a quick crash course (no pun intended). That being said, you can use these tips to start improving:
- Adjust the seat so your arms bend at a 45-degree angle and your feet can comfortably reach the pedals.
- Adjust your mirrors before you drive to maximize visibility.
- Always check your blind spot before switching lanes.
- Learn what all the gauges mean on your instrument cluster—they can help adjust your driving in unfavorable conditions.
- Start the car with your foot on the brake.
- Practice backing up in an open parking lot so you can improve without any obstacles.
- Keep your hands at the 9 and 3 positions on your steering wheel.
- Keep at least three seconds of space between you and the next car. To find out if you’re too close, pick a point on the road and make sure it takes at least three seconds for you to reach that spot after the car in front of you.
And finally, get experience on low-traffic streets. The more you drive, the better you’ll get, and the more confident you’ll feel behind the wheel!
