How can I clear my driving record in California?
I want to clear my driving record to take advantage of lower car insurance rates for safer driving. However, I’m not sure where to start. What can I do to clear or clean my driving record if I live in California?

If you want to clear your driving record in California, the state has a program for first-time offenders. If you’re eligible, this program may allow you to clear your driving record—at least to some degree. To apply for this program, follow these steps:
- Get permission from the traffic court. Typically, the traffic court will send you a notice in the mail saying that you’re eligible to clean your driving record and telling you the next steps to take.
- Sign up for a California DMV-approved defensive driving course. This course can be taken either in-person or online. Note that you can only take this course if you haven’t taken the same class in the last 18 months.
- Complete the course.
- Pass the final exam.
- Send a certificate of completion of the course to your local DMV.
Taking this course only takes between 2.5 to 4 hours, so it’s well worth your effort, especially if you want to lower your car insurance rates.
