How Do I Unlock the Steering Wheel on a Honda Accord?

Last night I had to parallel park on the street outside my house. I left the wheel cranked to one side when I got out. This morning, the wheel seems to be stuck in place. I’m not sure if I broke something or why my wheel would be locked. Is there a way to unlock the steering wheel in a Honda Accord?

Don’t worry, nothing is broken. Many cars, such as the
Honda Accord
, have a steering wheel locking feature. It’s mainly an extra safety feature to keep your car from rolling when it’s stopped on a hill. Luckily, unlocking the steering wheel on a Honda Accord is quick and easy.
The steering wheel lock usually engages in response to a hard turn on the wheel, especially when the car is off. To unlock it, use these techniques:
  • Turn the wheel as much as you can in the same direction that you turned it when getting out of the car. Be careful not to be too forceful. It’s tempting to want to pull hard on the steering wheel when it’s locked, but this won’t help and can actually make matters worse.
  • With the wheel turned, insert the key and start the engine. The wheel should loosen right up.
  • If that doesn’t work, shut off the engine, turn the wheel in the opposite direction, and start the engine again.
  • Some drivers have found that using an alternate key can help. If you have an extra set, try using them instead.
Following these steps, You should be able to get the wheel unlocked in just a couple of minutes—about the same amount of time it takes to shave hundreds off of your monthly insurance payments using
