How can I change the battery in my Honda Civic key fob?

The battery in my key fob is dying, but I need it for a road trip. I’d like to get a fresh battery, so I don’t have to worry about it on the road. What’s the best way to change the battery in my Honda Civic key fob?

Road trips
can be loads of fun, especially when you’re driving in a car you like! That said, little details like faulty key fobs can put a bit of a damper on the whole trip. Luckily, you can follow these simple steps to change the battery in your Honda Civic key fob:
  • Start by pressing the button on the side of your fob that releases the metal key.
  • Take out the metal key.
  • Pry open the key fob with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Once opened, place your thumb just above the battery to keep everything in place.
  • Take out the dead battery by lightly prying it up with your screwdriver.
  • Put your new battery into the keyfob, noting the + and - markers that show the correct direction for the battery.
  • Carefully press together the two halves until they snap back together.
  • Slide your metal key back into place.
With these steps, your key fob should be good as new! If you’re still having trouble replacing it, consider taking your key fob to a Honda dealer. You’ll need to buy a new battery, but they can usually change out your old one for free!
