How bad is driving in Dallas?

I’m going to visit a friend in Dallas. I come from a small town, so I’m not used to driving in the city. She told me that traffic is horrendous, but I thought she might just be exaggerating. Is driving in Dallas actually that bad?

While much of
Texas
is rural, especially out west, Dallas is home to 1.3 million people. Even with well-planned roads, driving in Dallas is bad by any stretch of the imagination.
Here are some statistics that might put it in perspective:
  • The average one-way commute in Dallas is 26.8 minutes, putting it over the national average.
  • The average traffic fatality rate is 14 deaths per 100,000 people. While this may not seem like much, you’re 46% more likely to die while driving in Dallas.
  • The city is surrounded by four interstates, as well as numerous major thoroughfares that are lined with traffic for about 12 hours a day.
But it isn’t all bad. As long as you are ready to drive, you should be fine. To combat the stress of driving in Dallas, follow these tips:
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Leave for any destination early
  • Relax!
