Does your driving record follow you state to state?

I’m moving from Illinois to Missouri for a new job. And while I’m excited about the move, I’m nervous that my driving record is going to impact my car insurance rates in Missouri. Does your driving record follow you from one state to another?

Congrats on the move to
Missouri
! Hopefully, this won’t sour your excitement, but yes, your driving record follows you from state to state.
Both Illinois and Missouri are members of the Driver License Compact, which is an agreement between 45 states and Washington, D.C. that pass along driving records between states. The only states that aren’t part of this agreement are:
  • Georgia
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Tennessee
  • Wisconsin
If you lived in one of those states and moved elsewhere, you may not have an issue.
Keep in mind that you need to get a Missouri driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Since you’re moving from Illinois to Missouri, make sure that you switch your car insurance over to your new state of residence, as well. To get the best rate, use the
