I recently took my Highlander into the shop because my check engine light came on. My mechanic ended up adjusting the timing chain on my engine, but I thought my Highlander had a timing belt. Does the Toyota Highlander have a timing belt or chain?

light pop up, but thankfully it seems like you got away with a cheap and easy fix! The Toyota Highlander may have either a timing belt or chain depending on the model year.A timing chain and a timing belt do the same thing, and your Highlander either has one or the other depending upon which model you own. The belt or chain connects to the gears of your crankshaft and camshaft to keep them in sync, which in turn ensures that your engine runs smoothly and efficiently.
- 4-cylinder engine (2001-2007, 2009-2014)
- V-6 (2008-2019)
And if you own one of these models, your engine has a timing belt:
- V-6 (2001-2007)
