Does renters insurance cover roof leaks?

I live on the top floor of my apartment building. I came home from work yesterday and realized the roof was leaking! My couch was underneath it, so safe to say it’s pretty damaged. Will my renters insurance cover roof leaks?

Coming home to a leaking roof is definitely not how someone wants to end their day! Thankfully, your
renters insurance
will cover damage caused by a roof leak.
Since the leak was likely caused by the accidental discharge of water, you should be able to submit a claim to your insurance company for your couch. That said, if you have a deductible associated with your policy, the replacement cost of your couch will need to be higher than your deductible. If not, you won’t be able to submit a claim.
You’ll want to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to find out what your next steps are. In most cases, you’ll need to submit information about your couch and pictures of the damage.
Once you get your couch taken care of, it never hurts to shop around for renters insurance. After submitting a claim, many find that their insurance rates increase, meaning you could end up paying more for the same coverage.
