Does renters insurance cover refrigerator food loss?

My entire apartment complex lost power for two days after a bad lightning storm. Unfortunately, I had just gone to the supermarket, and my refrigerator and freezer were filled with food! Will my renters insurance cover refrigerator food loss?

Ugh—nothing like bad timing! Yes, your renters policy should cover this loss because it was due to a storm and not because you failed to pay your electric bill or had an old refrigerator die.
It’s not likely that you saved your grocery receipts. This is why most policies offer a standard payout of up to $500 for food spoilage. Unfortunately, it may well be that your deductible is more than the amount you are covered for, so it’s worth considering whether paying your deductible will cost more than your spoiled food bill.
