Putting sugar in a gas tank is one of those awful acts of revenge or vandalism that most of us fear. However, as it turns out, putting sugar in a gas tank is not likely to hurt a car or truck engine.
First, sugar doesn’t dissolve in gas, which means if someone were to add a cup of sugar to your tank, it would probably just settle at the bottom. Secondly, modern vehicles have fuel filters that filter out tiny debris so that it doesn’t get to your engine. However, sugar just might cause problems by gunking up your filter.
So while putting sugar in a gas tank may work in a teenage horror flick as a way to strand victims in a haunted campground, its harmful effects are more myth than reality.
