Why won’t my windshield wipers stop moving?

There’s been a lot of rain recently and when I got home from work today, I found that I couldn’t shut my wipers off—why won’t my windshield wipers stop?

Good question! Unfortunately, there are a couple of reasons why your windshield wipers won’t stop, including a faulty relay, faulty wiring, a bad park switch, or even broken controls.
Here’s a breakdown of some common causes:
  • Faulty relay: located inside the windshield wiper assembly, the relay helps regulate electricity to the wipers—if it breaks, the wipers either won’t shut off or won’t turn on
  • Faulty wiring: a short in the wiring governing the connection between switch and wiper can cause the signal to be interrupted, leaving the wipers turned on
  • Bad park switch: the wiper motor has what’s called a park switch that controls the flow of electricity—if it’s damaged, the electrical current won’t break and the wipers will act as though still turned on
  • Broken controls: the stalk that you (usually) use to turn the wipers on has a switch in it that, should it break, can cause the wipers to not receive the signal that you’re trying to turn them off
Hope this helps!
