Inheriting a family heirloom is one of those momentous occasions. And your roommate’s correct—you’ll want to take out supplemental insurance to cover the ring if it’s valuable. Standard
covers personal property from perils such as theft and fire, but it won’t cover the full value of the jewelry.

If it hasn’t already been, have the ring professionally appraised. You’ll need to determine whether the ring is valuable enough to insure separately with a rider. In addition, you’ll likely need to send the appraisal to your insurance company, in this case, Progressive.
