Does home insurance cover tenant damage?

I live in California and, several years ago, transformed my garage into an accessory dwelling unit, or what we Californians refer to as ADU’s. I have recently begun renting it out, which is why I want to know–does my home insurance cover tenant damage to my ADU?

I commend your garage on its transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.
Typically
home insurance
does not cover tenant damage, but there is an insurance that’s right for you. What you’re looking for is landlord insurance, which protects against accidental or sudden damage to your ADU.
It’s worth noting that your landlord’s insurance will not extend to your tenant’s personal belongings. Renters are responsible for protecting themselves and their personal property. The best thing you can do as a thoughtful landlord is to strongly suggest that your tenants cover themselves with renters insurance.
If you want to make sure you’re not paying too much for your current coverage, you should use
