Does home insurance cover rain water damage?

There was a huge thunderstorm that rolled through my town. It rained a ton, which led to lots of flooding and high winds. As a result, a tree ended up falling and breaking a window in our home. Due to the amount of rain, some of our personal belongings were water damaged. Will home insurance cover the rain water damage?

That sounds scary, I hope everyone is okay! Home insurance does cover certain instances of rain water damage as long as it occurred from a
covered peril
.
In this instance, you should have coverage for the damage the rain caused to your personal property. Wind storms and falling objects are covered perils in a home insurance policy and the rain water damage is a result of that damage.
However, rain water damage wouldn’t be covered if your home began to flood due to heavy rain. For any flooding, you’d need a
flood insurance
policy.
Additionally, if you had an older roof, you may not have coverage for any leaks from rain since age is a common exclusion.
You’ll want to reach out to your insurance company to determine the coverage you have and file a claim. Unless you have replacement cost coverage, your damaged belongings will be paid out on an actual cash value basis.
After settling your claim, you may find your insurance rates increase. If that happens, consider using
Jerry
. A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even help you cancel your old policy.
