Does home insurance cover broken windows?
I came back from vacation only to find that someone broke into my house. Thankfully, the police got most of my stuff back, but my picture window was wrecked. My contractor says it’ll cost about $1,000 to replace the window. Will insurance cover this cost?

A break-in can be traumatizing, and it’s good to know that you recovered your personal possessions. When it comes to fixing the window, yes, most standard homeowner policies will cover that repair as long as the damage amount exceeds your deductible.
Let’s review when standard homeowners insurance covers broken windows:
- Theft or vandalism: These are considered standard perils, and they are covered. The guy who broke into your house essentially committed vandalism when he forced his way inside.
- Fire and other perils: Standard perils include fire, wind damage, hail, and explosions (among others). Only perils explicitly named on the policy will be covered.
- If your neighbor’s kid hits a ball through your window: This type of damage would be covered by your neighbor’s personal liability coverage (Coverage E of a homeowners policy).
If your child accidentally pitches a ball through your window, you’d be out of luck.
However, it may be that your deductible is higher than the cost of your damages. If this is your situation, you’ll have to cover the cost of repairs yourself.
