Does home insurance cover an accidental fire?

Last weekend, my husband accidentally caused a kitchen fire while cooking. Luckily, the fire was contained to the kitchen and no one was hurt, but it did a lot of damage. Will our home insurance cover an accidental fire?

Sorry to hear about the accident, but thankfully your family is safe. Another piece of good news:
home insurance
policies do typically cover accidental fires.
Standard home insurance policies provide the following when there’s an accidental fire:
  • Dwelling coverage: This coverage will help to rebuild the area of the kitchen that was damaged. It helps with repairing or replacing sheetrock and countertops, for instance.
  • Loss of use coverage: If your family must live elsewhere while the damage is being repaired, this part of your policy will pay for a short-term hotel stay.
  • Personal property coverage: I assume appliances and other kitchenware were damaged. Your policy will payout to help you replace these items.
When doesn’t home insurance cover fire damage?
  • If the fire was intentionally set by the homeowner, insurers will not payout.
  • If the fire was caused by unpermitted renovations, this may also result in the insurer denying coverage.
Best of luck recovering from the fire damage!
