Does having a dog affect your home insurance?

I adopted a pit bull from my local animal shelter. He’s been pretty gentle and well-behaved so far, but we’re still getting to know each other. I didn’t think about this until now, but does having a dog affect my home insurance? Should I tell my provider about my new pet?

How exciting to welcome a new animal into your home! Depending on your insurance company, you may see a higher insurance premium if your provider deems your dog a dangerous breed.
Those breeds could include pit bulls, rottweilers, or German shepherds, but it depends on the provider, so you’ll have to check with yours. Some providers may even have exclusions for certain breeds.
Regardless, it’s still a good idea to tell your home insurance provider you’ve gotten a dog, otherwise you could lose out on
personal liability protection
if an incident ever did happen that resulted in your dog injuring someone or damaging their property.
That’s not to say your dog is inherently vicious, just that the unexpected can happen, and regardless of your dog’s breed, you’ll want to be covered if it does.
