Does GEICO renters insurance cover mold?
I’m starting to look around for renters insurance, and I’m going through my first quote from GEICO now. The rental house I’m moving into doesn’t have much storage other than the basement, which is probably where I’m going to have to store a lot of my books, so I’m concerned about potential moisture problems. Does renters insurance under GEICO cover mold damage?

renters insurance covers mold. When it comes to protecting your personal property, probably not, because GEICO doesn’t include mold damage as a
named peril
in its renters insurance. That’s pretty typical of most renters insurance policies.However, if the mold is caused by something you’re covered for, like a leak or burst pipe, you might still be covered. Keep in mind, though, that if it appears the leak was obvious and ongoing for a while but you failed to address it, that might foil your chances for a successful claim.
On the other hand, if the mold in your rental home has made it uninhabitable, your loss of use coverage should help you stay somewhere else and cover living expenses until the problem is addressed.
If you have any valuable rare or antique books in your collection, it’s probably best you keep them out of the basement, just in case. You could also seek out additional coverage for them.
