Does car insurance include coverage in Canada or Mexico?
I often travel through Canada and occasionally in Mexico. Does domestic U.S. car insurance typically cover you in Canada and Mexico or do I need to buy a separate policy?

“Most
car insurance
companies extend your coverage throughout Canada. Since car insurance regulations and driving laws are similar in Canada, it is easier for companies to extend their coverage. In Mexico, it’s a different story. Because of the increased risk, language barrier, and lack of law enforcement or regulations, you usually have to purchase an additional policy. To confirm whether your car insurance covers you, you can look at your policy conditions. If you’re unsure or unable to find information on it, you can also call your insurance company directly.
Several major insurers provide additional policies for Mexico, including:
- Progressive
- Allstate
- State Farm
- GEICO
If you have a local or regional carrier, they may not offer insurance for either Canada or Mexico. In this case, you may want to check out the
