Great idea to check the driving requirements for the rental company before your family arrives! Alamo does require an international driving permit for international visitors to rent a car in America—but only if their home country’s driver’s license is not in English.
Since your family is from Europe, they’ll likely be okay without an international driving permit (IDP). However, they will need a valid driver’s license with a photograph from back home.
But for anyone with a driver’s license in a language that is not English (e.g., Arabic, Russian, Japanese, etc.), an IDP is required.
You or your family may want to give Alamo a call to double-check their requirements, especially since some U.S. states operate under different rules. Alamo customer service can be reached at 1-888-233-8749.
Driving laws differ between countries—and even between states—so it’s important to understand the laws in your destination. On top of that, car insurance requirements also differ.
