All Texas-registered vehicles are required to receive an annual inspection, and some vehicles are also required to have an emissions test (also known as a smog check) in addition to the safety inspection.
The following types of vehicles are required to have a smog check each year:
Vehicles registered in Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson counties
Gasoline-powered vehicles
Vehicles 2 through 24 years old OR upon expiration of the two-year initial inspection sticker
Diesel vehicles, all-electric vehicles, and motorcycles are exempt from the smog testing requirements.
