Do insurance companies take pictures of your home?

My wife and I are in the process of buying our first home. A friend was telling us they had some people from their insurance company snooping around and taking pictures of their house, and that doesn’t sit right with me. Do insurance companies take pictures of your home? Is that even legal?

Congratulations on buying your first home! And to answer your question, yes, some insurance companies do take pictures of your home, and yes, it’s legal. Whether or not the insurance provider will photograph your home is stated in your policy documentation.
Why are they photographing your home? Simply put, they want to ensure the information you provided them is accurate and honest. They’ll usually send inspectors within 45 to 60 days of signing up for your policy, and then again when your policy is set to renew to see if there are any changes to the condition of the property.
Buying a home involves reading lots of fine print. Your
homeowner’s insurance
policy, your mortgage, understanding local and state laws and ordinances—buying a home comes with a lot of unadvertised homework.
Make sure you read everything you sign carefully, especially documents involving your mortgage and your homeowner’s insurance policy. And it goes without saying, but keep all of these documents together, organized, and someplace safe as well.
