It’s so exciting that you’re making a change by moving internationally! Being an ex-pat has a lot of benefits, and it’s a great way to experience another country. You can drive for up to 12 months with your unexpired US license in New Zealand or an International Driving Permit (IDP).
After 12 months, you will be required to get a New Zealand driver’s license like you’d need
in most countries
. If you’d rather get an IDP, you’ll be eligible to drive in more than one country and will have an identification document that is recognized by the United Nations in multiple languages. To get one, you will have to:- Apply with theFIA/AIT
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Apply within your home country
- Be fully licensed within your home country (no learner’s permits allowed)
- Pay a $20 permit fee
- Bring two photographs that follow thesame standards as a US passport
Once you have your documents in hand, you can apply at various agencies such as
