Do both tenants need renters insurance?

I recently moved in with a roommate. Our landlord is requesting we have a renters insurance policy. I’m not sure if that means we both need one or just a policy in general. Do both roommates need renters insurance?

Congrats on moving in! While you’ll need to speak with your landlord about their requirements for your
renters insurance policy
, it’s usually a personal decision whether both roommates need renters insurance.
If your landlord requires that only one person maintains a renters policy for the apartment, you both won’t need renters insurance. That said, whoever is the policyholder will only have coverage for their own personal property. A renters policy won’t cover both of your belongings from damage unless you both have insurance or are on the policy.
While it may not be a requirement, it’s typically recommended that each roommate maintain their own policy. Renters policies typically only cost $6 to $30 a month for at least $20,000 of protection for your personal property, often making it well worth the cost.
