Can you use the bathroom in an RV while it’s driving?
My dad is insistent that we take a family vacation in his new RV this year. My mom doesn’t want to because she says it’ll be a pain to pull over such a big vehicle to use the bathroom every few hours. I told her we can use the RV bathroom while Dad drives. She says I’m wrong! Who’s right here?

You may be able to use the bathroom in an RV while it’s driving—as long as you’re not the driver, of course! But the definitive answer depends on the state.
In some states, all RV passengers need to be seated with a seatbelt on while the RV is in motion for safety reasons. In other states, it’s okay for passengers to use the RV amenities, like the bathroom and shower, while traveling down the road.
Even if it’s allowed, be careful! Using the bathroom while the vehicle is in motion is inherently risky.
Lastly, note that you absolutely cannot use an RV bathroom while driving if it’s:
- a travel trailer,
- a camper,
- or any kind of pull-behind trailer.
