There are about 2.3 million electric cars in the U.S. as of December 2021, with a vast majority concentrated in California and the Northeast. This accounts for about 1% of the total number of cars on American roads.
The reason for this concentration is that politically progressive states with highly concentrated populations were early adopters of this technology. As such, they have the infrastructure and possible tax breaks in place to incentivize the number of electric cars being purchased and driven.
That’s not to take anything away from other areas of the country. The only issue is that sparsely populated areas may not have the infrastructure to make electric car ownership feasible—at least not yet.
However, the Biden Administration has laid out plans to make electric cars comprise 50% of all new cars sold by 2030, which could cause quite a rise in electric vehicles in the near future.
