Can you turn right on a red light in Alabama?

I just moved to Alabama for work, and I’m on the road for a lot of the working day. I’m usually in a hurry while on the road, but I can’t afford a ticket, and I’m not quite up to speed on local driving laws. Can you turn right on a red light in Alabama?

In
Alabama
, it is legal to turn right on a red light as long as there is no sign prohibiting you from doing so.
While we here at Jerry certainly understand needing to use the facilities while on the road, be sure to always be mindful of other cars on the road, any pedestrians, respect all traffic laws and always obey the speed limit, no matter how badly you have to go.
Now, in Alabama, follow these rules when approaching a red light, and you won’t run afoul of the law:
  • Make a full and complete stop at the indicated stop line
  • Make sure you are stopped before entering the crosswalk on the near-side intersection
  • If there is no marked stop line or a crosswalk present, make a full and complete stop before proceeding into the intersection
  • Always give pedestrians and other traffic the right of way while they utilize the intersection
Running afoul of
Alabama’s red light regulations
can come with serious penalties. If you get caught turning where a right-on-red is prohibited, you can be subject to the following penalties:
  • A misdemeanor
  • Up to $100 in fines
  • Up to 30 days in jail
Repeat offenses are subject to the following penalties, along with state-imposed fees and costs:
  • Second offense: up to 30 days in jail and/or up to $200 in fines
  • Third offense: Three months in jail and/or up to $500 in fines
Violating Alabama’s stop light law also comes with three demerit points.
