Can you rent a car with a bad driving record?
I want to rent a car on a trip, but I’m worried that the rental company will find out I have a poor driving record. I’ve never rented before, so I’m not sure what to expect. Can I rent a car if I have a bad driving record?

, the rental car company is unlikely to check your driving record. However, some rental companies have begun to scan driver’s licenses as a way to protect themselves from bad drivers.In general, the only way that you may be denied is if you have a recent DUI or an interlock system on your vehicle.
If you have a poor driving record (tickets or accidents), these companies are unlikely to check your record:
- Enterprise
- Alamo
- National
- Hertz
- Dollar
- Thrifty
The only rental car company that does an in-depth scan of your driving record is Avis Budget Group (Avis, Budget, and Payless). If you rent from any of these three companies, they will check your record to ensure you don’t have:
- Reckless driving convictions within the last three years
- More than three accidents in the last three years
- DUIs within the last four years
- A suspended license
