Can you flat tow a 2017 Ford Focus?

A buddy of mine has an RV, so my friends and I are driving out to the woods to go camping in it next week. We wanted to bring my Ford Focus with us to make smaller driving trips around the campgrounds easier. Can you flat tow a 2017 Ford Focus?

Totally understandable to want a smaller SUV on hand for those supply runs—hauling the RV to the grocery store definitely sounds like a hassle.
Fortunately, you can flat tow a 2017 Ford Focus. But, there are a few important limitations:
  • Your Ford Focus must have front-wheel drive—RWD or AWD drivetrains won’t work
  • You cannot exceed 70 mph while flat towing
  • Make sure you set your transmission to Neutral (N) or Neutral Tow mode if applicable
  • Remember to disconnect your negative (black) cable from the battery to keep your battery from dying during the drive
Refer to your owner’s manual for more specific instructions on how to flat tow your 2017 Ford Focus. And if you don’t already have them, you may need to purchase the following parts to prepare your Focus for towing:
  • Base plate
  • Tow bar
  • Safety cables
  • Wiring
  • Braking system
Before you and your buddies head out to camp, it’s also a good rule of thumb to make sure you have quality
car insurance
coverage for the road ahead.
