Can I travel coast to coast in an electric car?
My boyfriend and I have been planning a cross-country trip this summer after I graduate from university in the spring. We’re not sure whose car to take: his car is gas-powered while mine is electric. Can we travel coast to coast in an electric car?

A cross-country trip sounds awesome! Yes, you can travel across the country in an
electric car
, however due to the limited driving range it may come with some unique challenges. In order to feel comfortable when driving across the country, here are some tips to keep in mind: - Map out your trip. It’s always a good idea to know where you’re going next and how you’ll get there but with EVs it’s essential. Unlike traditional cars, refueling stations are a lot less common so know where you can charge. Some states, like California, have an abundance of charging stations, whereas others have a lot less. Don’t push your range to its full extent; be conservative with the available mileage.
- Prep your car. Again, preparation of your vehicle is essential. Even though it doesn’t need oil checks, make sure to visit the mechanic to ensure everything is in proper working order before you leave.
- Download Charging station apps. There are a number of apps available for free on the App Store and Google Play store that will help to find thenearest EV charging stationswith extra information on each.
- Enjoy the journey. EVs work best when they charge slowly as frequent rapid charging can cause long-term damage to the battery. While your car is charging, as long as it’s in a secure place, feel free to stop and smell the roses!
