Can I test-drive a car without insurance?

I want to buy my first car, but I don't know if it will be from a dealership or private sale. Since I don't have insurance of my own, am I covered to test-drive cars?

“Congratulations on your first car! It is crucial to make sure that any vehicle you drive already has insurance on it before you get behind the wheel.
If you go with a dealership, this will not be an issue. They have dealer insurance and, in most cases, they will ride with you when you test the car.
A
private seller
is different. Before you drive, make sure they know you are not insured yet. It would be even better to ask to see a copy of their active policy before you test-drive.
If you decide to purchase the car from a private seller, get
car insurance quotes online
so you can start the policy before you head home with your new vehicle.
