We all make mistakes! But you’re right to want it off your record, as DUIs come with serious consequences, including a misdemeanor charge at minimum. Depending on your case and state laws, you may be eligible to have your DUI expunged from your record, which could lessen the consequences of your conviction.
Penalties for a DUI vary by case and state, but they could include short prison sentences and expensive fines. DUI convictions also show up on background checks, which can greatly complicate job prospects or even applying for housing.
Not every state allows expungement for DUIs, and eligibility for expungement varies by state. The criteria may include paying off your fines and waiting for a specified amount of time. Once you qualify, the removal process can take anywhere from six to twelve months, and it could cost you around $550 or more.
If you can qualify for expungement, it’s a smart idea to apply with the help of a DUI lawyer, as the process tends to be quite complicated. It’s important to note, though, even if you’re successful in having your DUI expunged from your record, it will still show up if you’re convicted of another DUI offense. Subsequent DUI charges will come with heftier penalties, as well.
