Can a locksmith make a car key without the original?

I had the misfortune of being mugged yesterday and the thief made off with my purse. My car keys were inside and I can’t find the spare anywhere. Can a locksmith carve a replacement key if I don’t have the original?

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident, but I’m glad you’re okay. The good news is if your key is stolen, a locksmith can make a car key without the original.
However, you’re going to need some information before the locksmith will make the key, including:
  • The VIN (vehicle identification number)
  • Your car’s make, model, and year
  • Your title and registration
In addition, you may want to call around to get quotes and ensure you’re not overpaying.
If you ever have an unfortunate incident like this one or any other issue while you’re driving, you may want to consider adding roadside assistance or
towing and labor coverage
to your current policy.
Not sure if you already have that coverage? Review your current policy, check if your current insurer offers those additions, and then shop around with the

app.
