Can a car battery die while driving?

My date stood me up because she said her car battery died on the highway. I think that’s a bunch of bull, but she swears it’s true. Is it possible? Can a car battery die while driving?

Sorry you got stood up, but your date is right—your car battery can die while driving. If the
battery hasn’t been filled
because of a problem with the alternator, the engine will pull power from the battery until it dies. You could pull over and
jump your battery
back to life, but chances are something is seriously wrong if your car battery dies while driving.
A car battery can die when driving because there is:
  • a problem with the alternator.
  • a broken or damaged drive belt.
  • a problem with the vehicle’s electrical system.
  • a malfunction of the battery.
To avoid further damage, you should
tow your vehicle
to your mechanic if your car battery dies while you’re driving. If you have the right kind of insurance, your tow and maybe even your repair will be covered.
