At what age can you start driving in Texas?

Help! My preteen son is already asking about learning how to drive, but we just moved to Texas a few years ago, and I have not looked into the driver's license process just yet. What’s the driving age in Texas?

What an exciting rite of passage for your son! You can start driving in
Texas
at 15 years old with a learner license, but you may begin an approved driver’s education course at age 14.
A Texas learner license allows teenagers to operate a vehicle only with a licensed adult driver in the front seat. In order to get a learner license, your son must:
  • Take driver’s education
  • Bring all required documents (including a Texas Driver Education Certificate) to a local Driver License Office
  • Pass a vision screening
  • Pass a knowledge test
At age 16, your son can then get a provisional driver’s license. To do this, he must first:
  • Hold his permit for at least six months
  • Complete behind-the-wheel driver training:
  • 7 hours observing a driving instructor
  • 7 hours driving with a driving instructor
  • 30 hours of driving practice (including 10 hours at night) with a licensed driver
  • Complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver Program within 90 days of taking the driving test
  • Pass the driving test
In order to get a driver’s license in Texas, your son will need to show proof of insurance. Whether you add him to
your current policy
or he gets his own coverage, car insurance is notoriously expensive for teenagers. For the best coverage at the best price, try comparison super app
