Why you should know your Audi’s lug pattern

You’ll need to know your Audi’s lug pattern before you can switch out your wheels.

The lug pattern is also known as a bolt pattern and indicates the number of lugs and the spacing on your wheel. The lug pattern is comprised of two numbers: the first number indicates how many bolt holes the wheel has and the second is the diameter measurement of the imaginary circle formed by the lug holes in the center of your wheel.

Audi’s 5x4.4 lug pattern indicates the wheel has 5 lugs organized in a 4.4-inch circle.

Lug pattern terminology 101

At first glance, the table above can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know what the terms mean and what the numbers are indicating. That’s why we’re here to help you understand the basics of lug pattern terminology!

OEM wheel size: OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and refers to the diameter of your Audi’s wheels. You’ll have to match the OEM wheel size to install new rims.

Lug pattern: The first number in the figure is the number of lug holes and the second is the diameter of the circle they form on your wheel.

Offset: This is the distance from the mounting surface to the center of the rim. A positive offset means the wheel is pulled in towards the car while a negative offset means the wheels will stick out. Most Audis have a high (+35-45) offset except for the 2021-2022 Audi Q8 which has a low/medium offset.

Stud size: Stud sizes are written in two different ways depending on where your car is manufactured. US fasteners are stud diameter x threads per inch while metric fasteners are written as stud diameter x distance between threads.

How to measure your Audi’s lug pattern

If your Audi is not listed in the table above, you can measure your own lug pattern using a ruler or tape measurer!

You’ll want to begin by counting the lugs on your wheel. As an Audi owner, you’ll count five lugs. All that is left to do is to measure the diameter of the lug pattern.

To find the diameter, measure from the outer edge of a lug hole directly across the circle and move the end of your ruler or tape measure to the closest lug and measure to the center of the lug hole.

If you count five lugs and measure a diameter of 4.4 inches, that means your Audi’s lug pattern is 5x4.4!
