Are there toll roads in Illinois?

I’m going on a cross-country road trip that goes through Illinois. I’ve never driven through the state before, so I want to be prepared and plan my route. Does Illinois have any toll roads?

There are five toll roads in Illinois, but they’re all located in and around the Chicago metropolitan area. Unless you’re headed to Chicago or through the Windy City, you won’t have to worry about tolls.
However, if you plan on going through the Chicago area, be prepared to pay a few tolls for the fastest route. The toll roads in Illinois are:
  • Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88)
  • Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294/I-80)
  • Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90)
  • Illinois Route 390
  • Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355)
Prices on these toll roads vary from $0.40 to $3.80. You can either pay the tolls online at

by entering your license plate or wait until you get an invoice in the mail.
