Are self-driving cars legal in Alabama?

I live in Birmingham. While Alabama is usually a bit behind when it comes to adopting new technology, I haven’t heard anything about laws prohibiting self-driving cars. I want them to arrive as soon as possible, and I want to learn more about them in my state. In Alabama, are self-driving cars legal?

If you’re worried about the prohibition of self-driving cars in
Alabama
, don’t be. Self-driving cars are legal in Alabama and these two bills passed by the state legislature appear to be fully supportive:
  • In 2016, Alabama created a Joint Legislative Committee specifically to oversee the testing and study of self-driving vehicles.
  • In 2018, the Alabama State Legislature enacted a law that exempted self-driving trucks from certain traffic laws, provided they are controlled at legal speeds and with remote electronic braking.
