A big tree came down across our garage in a storm—and there’s no way we’re getting this thing off without help. Are fallen trees covered by home insurance?

So sorry to hear about your garage! In your situation, the fallen tree will probably be covered by home insurance because it damaged a structure.
But before you file a claim, there are a few things you need to know about tree damage and homeowners insurance.
For you to receive coverage, the tree must have fallen due to a
covered peril
—wind or lightning, if these are named in your policy.
Since it damaged your garage, you can probably file a claim to cover the cost of removal as well as repairs to the garage.
Secondly, your policy covers damage to your physical home with secondary coverage for detached structures. If the tree had fallen in an open field instead of across your garage, its removal would not be covered.
Be aware that insurance companies can deny coverage if the tree was old and rotting prior to the storm. That’s because rotten trees are the homeowner’s responsibility and damage they cause is preventable.
