I'm a New York resident and I'm about to buy my first car. How much car insurance coverage do I need in New York?

I live in upstate New York and I'm 22 years old. I'm about to buy my first car and I want to be totally above board and legal. How much car insurance do I need?

Thanks for your question! In New York, the state-minimum limits are:
  • 25/50 for bodily injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident if you cause a collision and someone in the other car gets hurt.
  • $10,000 for property damage: This will fix the other person’s car if you hit someone.
  • $50,000 mandatory no-fault coverage: This is already included in all New York policies.
If you’re financing the car, the finance company will typically require you to also have full coverage, which means you’ll have to add
comprehensive
and
collision
coverage to your policy.
