We’re sorry to hear that your Ford Expedition is having shifting problems. And unfortunately yes, the Expedition is known to have transmission issues, especially older models. But thankfully, your specific problem may have a fairly simple solution.
Look around on the floor of your Expedition for a gold hex screw (it’s not a flathead or Phillips head). It might be stuck somewhere underneath the dash of your car, too. Check under the floor mat as well. If it’s still in your car, it should be directly under the steering wheel.
If you don’t find that screw, you may need to visit a mechanic. But if you do find it, and if you aren’t afraid of a simple DIY project, you can carefully remove the lower part of your dashboard, look under the steering wheel near the column shifter, and you should see a hole where that screw fits, alongside an identical golden screw.
Screw it back in, firm but not too tight, and firm up (again, not too tight) the screw beside it too. Now try again. Is your car shifting properly? Great! If not, you’ll want to visit a mechanic.
This is a somewhat common issue in Ford Expeditions and some other models. And luckily, this is an easy fix. But some other problems will require a mechanic’s help with.
Older expeditions may need transmission fluid replaced, or might have mechanical issues due to wear and tear. Your best bet in these instances is to take it to a mechanic and have it looked at. In higher-mileage Expeditions, you may even be looking at replacing the transmission, which can cost thousands of dollars. We don’t want to scare you, but it’s unfortunately possible.
Hopefully, you won’t have to spend too much fixing your Ford Expedition’s shifting problems. But hey, since you’re here already, maybe we can help you save hundreds of dollars per year (if not thousands) on your car insurance
