How Cobb County property taxes are determined

Real property tax in Cobb County is calculated by multiplying the assessed home value by the local tax rate or “millage rate”.

The millage rate is determined by the county’s current effective tax rate. Properties inside the limits of a city are taxed by both the city and county governments. 
The term “millage” comes from the word mill. In this context, mill is defined as $1 of property tax obligation per $1,000 of a home’s assessed value. The number of mills applied to your property tax is determined by your city or township. Property owners in unincorporated Cobb County areas are charged the following mills:
  • General Fund: 8.46
  • Fire Fund: 2.86
  • Debt Service Fund: 0.13
  • Cobb County School District: 18.90
  • Marietta School District: 17.97
You can also multiply the total number of mills on your property by the number of times 1000 goes into the assessed value of your home. It sounds complex, but think of it like this:
Total tax obligation in dollars = total number of applied mills x (assessed value/1000)

How to pay property taxes in Cobb County 

Cobb County property taxes are levied annually and are due on October 15th. 
You have a few choices about how you want to pay your property taxes. You can pay online, in person, by mail, over the phone, or through your mortgage company
  • Online: You can
    pay online
    using a credit/debit card or an e-check. 
  • By mail: You can pay by mail with a check made out to Cobb County Tax Commissioner. Mailed payments need to be postmarked by October 15th and addressed to: Cobb County Tax Commissioner, P.O. Box 100127 Marietta, GA 30061.
  • In person: You can pay in person with cash, check, e-check, credit/debit card, or money order. Payment can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • East Cobb Office at 4400 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta
  • South Cobb Government Service Center at 4700 Austell Road in

  • Phone: You can pay through the automated phone service at 1-866-PAY-COBB (1-866-729-2622), which accepts credit/debit cards. 
  • Through your bank: If you want to pay directly through your bank using an ACH or wire transfer, you’ll need to contact the Cobb County Customer Care Center at 214-653-7811. 
  • Through your mortgage: If you arranged to have property tax payments made through your mortgage company when you bought your house, the payments should come out of the associated escrow account automatically. You’ll still get a bill sent to you so you can keep track of the amounts paid.
